Kommatia knit dress
This pattern is from Kommatia. My first attempt was disastrous - I made it up in burgundy scuba, which I haven’t worked with before. It was actually fun to work with - love the no hemming - but I think I really miscalculated the amount of stretch it had as I could just about get it on, but I looked like a stuffed sausage and the neck was so tight it was restricting my breathing! There’s bodycon, and then there’s not being able to move your knees more than an inch apart.
I tried again with some dark green polyester boucle style fabric. When I tested two scraps of fabric, it looked to me like the scuba and the boucle had about the same amount of maximum stretch, it’s just that the scuba sprang back much more powerfully. The boucle was a little more easygoing.
So my second try fit well. I haven’t worked with knit / stretch fabrics that much and I think it is going to take some more experience to know what kind of stretch I need for a particular pattern. To finish the neckline, I sewed on a strip to the right side, flipped it over and topstitched it down. This came out much better than sleeve hems for some reason, which I think I managed to stretch out too far? They are a bit loose on my forearms but it’s not that noticeable.
This has proved easy to wear so far. I think the boucle fabric is probably intended more for a jumper or a cardigan but I don’t see why it can’t be a dress - it’s cosy but reasonably smart looking.
